Vancouver Giants

Memorial Cup Final Recap

Just two weeks ago the Medicine Hat Tigers were the ones jumping off the bench and dog piling each other in celebration of snatching the WHL Championship from the Vancouver Giants. However on Sunday afternoon the two would meet again for the right to lift the Memorial Cup Trophy. The Giants would not be punked again by the Tigers.

The first period was dominated by the Giants. They won the opening faceoff and got the first shot on net. The next shift Milan Lucic came out and proceeded to destroy the entire Tigers team. He made 4 hits in a row and on the fourth he got into a fight and beat Tigers tough guy Bendfeld. The Giants were a team possessed and intent on righting the wrong that happened to them in the WHL finals. There would be no scoring in the first period but it was dominated entirely by the Vancouver Giants.

The second period started much like the first with the Giants hitting anything in site. However their enthusiasm got the Giants into some penalty trouble. They had to kill a few penalties but remained focused. Early in the second period AJ Thelen took a shot from the point which gave Matt Keetley some troubled and Mario Bliznak was able to coral the rebound and chip it up and over a sprawling Keetley and open the scoring for the Giants. However with five minutes left in the second period Wacey Rabbit took a hooking penalty which would be costly for the Giants. Derek Dorsett the Tigers super pest got the behind the net and passed it to a wide open Darren Helm for the Tigers first goal of the game. This gave the Tigers life after a lack luster first and second period.

The Giants would not be fazed by that goal. The third started the like the second and the first for the Vancouver Giants. They came out and hit everything in site. The game remained tied 1-1 until the 4 minute mark of the third. Milan Lucic took a shot from the slot that went wide of the net it caught Matt Keetley off guard and he scrambled in his crease. Before he knew Michal Repik got the puck behind the net snuck around the short side and deposited puck, the eventual game winner, through the five hole of Keetley. This goal sent all 16,000 fans into a frenzy and it became only a matter of time before the Giants would lift the Memorial Cup for 89th time. Spencer Machacek scored an empty net goal to seal the game and bring the cup to Vancouver.

Milan Lucic was named MVP of the tournament. The overall attendance was a record for the Memorial Cup tournament 130,000 and change over the span of 9 days. The finals were also a sell out at 16,000. Congratulations goes to the Vancouver Giants!
