HSBC Celebration of Light

Night becomes day and the sky above Vancouver explodes with colour during the HSBC Celebration of Light. Over 1.6 million spectators packed the waterfront around English Bay last year to thrill to the choreographed pyrotechnic showcase. Last year's champ Mexico won't be back to defend its crown, so look for perennial fave China to regain top place.

Three countries will participate this year.

HSBC Celebration of Light isn't just a forum for these talented men and women to show off their colourful explosions. The Celebration of Light is a serious competition, with judges scoring each country's entry on the following criteria:

  • synchronization
  • architecture (at low, medium or high altitudes)
  • colour
  • design
  • music
  • length

All shows go on rain or shine starting at 10:00 PM. Crowds start to gather around 8:30, so get there early to ensure a good spot. Bring a radio and tune into 101.1 FM. They will be carrying a simulcast of the performance's music.
