As a seaside city known for its great food, Vancouver is surprisingly short on establishments offering everyone's favourite meal. That meal, of course, is fish and chips. Look no further good cod lovers, for now you can thank Poseidon - not to mention owner Gord Martin of Bin 941/942 fame - for Go Fish. Located at the public fish sales docks near Granville Island, Go Fish prides itself on using locally caught cod, salmon, halibut and various other shellfish, all of which are acquired straight from the fishing boats that catch them in the harbour. Take note that even the main ingredient in the beer-batter used on the fish is local, coming from the local brewery on Granville Island, only steps away. The simple shack at Go Fish has a patio that seats about 12 (with heaters for winter diners) and many visitors grab a spot along the neighbouring seawall - the no-frills aesthetic and the smell of the sea only add to the charm. Generally speaking, there is a lineup as long as the chips are tasty, so be prepared to wait to choose from a perfect selection of fish (eg. 1 piece cod, $7) all that come with chips and a sesame coleslaw that redefines what the oft-shamed garnish should be. Go Fish specialties like the oyster po'boy ($8) and the fresh salmon burger ($8) prove the benefit of getting seafood fresh or frozen-at-sea while daily soups warm the soul ($5). Chances are good that once you go to Go Fish you will be back, so be sure to experiment on repeat visits. Plates like the tacones (one $5; two $9) which are a combination of a taco and a sushi cone, beg to be tried. When hunger strikes, Go Fish!
