Currently Filming in Vancouver

Vancouver Film Industry

Updated July 2, 2007

There is a condition that seems to affect most Vancouverites: faux film set apathy. They see the trailers and transport trucks that signify a filming location and they do their very best to appear completely disinterested while driving/walking by - sometimes even vocally mocking those who slow and gawk at the "spectacle", only to steal as many quick glances themselves as possible without getting busted, just in case they can see someone worth seeing.

This month, keep your eye out for these films shooting around the area. Or don't. It's up to you.

Ace of Hearts

Director: David Mackay

Starring: David Patrick Greene, Matthew Harrison

A cop sets out to clear the name of his K9 partner after he is wrongly accused of mauling a suspect. My buddy Gerald and I auditioned for the part of the dog (he was the front, I took up the rear), but they claimed our costume wasn't quite what they were looking for.

Christmas Cottage

Director: Michael Campus

Starring: Jared Padalecki, Peter O'Toole

The story of how painter Thomas Kinkade was inspired to paint his beloved masterpiece The Christmas Cottage. No idea how they can stretch this into a two-hour movie, unless he paints really, really slow.

Dr. Doolittle: First Dog

Director: Craig Shapiro

Starring: Kyla Pratt, Kristen Wilson

This is actually the FIFTH sequel to a movie that really didn't need to be made in the first place. How did we go from Citizen Kane to this?

Elegy

Director: Isabel Coixet

Starring: Penelope Cruz, Sir Ben Kingsley

A respected professor begins an affair with a student, only to have jealousy transform him into a blood-thirsty, multi-tentacled flying cyclops. Okay, we made that last part up - but with sex scenes featuring a 64-year old Kingsley, this might actually turn out to be a bit of a horror movie.

Far Cry

Director: Uwe Boll

Starring: Michael Pare

Uwe Boll (BloodRayne, House of the Dead) is making a name for himself as Hollywood's preeminent director of crappy movies based on video games no one has heard of. He returns to Vancouver this summer to film the story of an ex-Special Ops agent who gets shot at and in turn shoots a bunch of people. Put the Academy on notice!

Snow Demon

Director: Paul Ziller

Starring: ???

A man survives a plane crash, only to be stalked by a blood thirsty Yeti. I had a nightmare like this once, only I was chased by Barbara Walters.

Tale of Two Sisters

Director: ???

Starring: ???

A remake of a terrifying South Korean horror film about twin sisters who return from a mental institution only to deal with an evil, controling stepmother -oh, and a ghost. No word on whether or not they'll cast Mark-Kate and Ashley as the twin leads, but we can always hope and pray.

They Came From Upstairs

Director: Thor Freudenthal

Starring: ???

A group of kids must protect their vacation home from invading aliens. Overcoming the unimaginable distances between galaxies? No Problem! Defeating some punk kids holed up in a cabin? Big Obstacle!

Tortured

Director: Nolan Lebovitz

Starring: Laurence Fishburne, Cole Hauser

Torn from the headlines! An FBI agent is torn after his superiors tell him to torture the head of a crime syndicate. We wonder if any of that torturing involves making the guy watch Fishburne in the last two Matrix sequels?

Tin Man

Director: Nick Willing

Starring: Kathleen Robertson, Richard Dreyfuss

A new, trippy, sci-fi version of the old-tyme classic "The Wizard of Oz". Who else is surprised they haven't already done a remake of this? This time around, Dorothy's trip to Oz will apparently run a bit longer, as this is scheduled to be released as a mini-series.

NEW

Trouble Man

Director: Thomas Dey

Starring: Chris Tucker, Eva Mendes

Chris Tucker takes time out of his busy shcedule (lately consisting mostly of rolling around in all his Rush Hour money) to star in this comedy about an undercover agent who gets mixed up with a woman whose past is littered with failed relationships. Lovers of mediocre action comedies are encouraged to start lining up now.

NEW

Watchmen

Director: Zack Snyder

Starring: Gerald Butler

Zack Snyder's follow up to his smash hit 300, this dark movie inspired by a graphic novel (as is just about every other movie made these days) tells the story of a man investigating the murder of an ex-super hero. As he digs deeper, our man finds that there is more than just capes and tights in the closets of these "heroes"
